May 2010

1a. A first alternate (first breeding plumage) male Kirtland's Warbler at Hillman Marsh near Point Pelee on 7 May 2010. It is a male because it has black over the bill extending down the cheeks and malar area.

1b. Same as above. Note strong molt contrast of old worn brown juvenal primaries and secondaries contrasting with newer fresher grey and black feathers, indicating it is in first alternate plumage. Male Kirtland's Warbler at Hillman Marsh on 7 May 2010.

2. A second male Kirtland's Warbler in first alternate plumage at Point Pelee National Park on 14 May 2010. Aged by its contrasting worn brown flight feathers. Note black over bill and lores extending down cheeks and malar area indicating a male. It was actively singing.
