Female Mountain Bluebird at Halls Road near Cranberry Marsh, Whitby

Female Mountain Bluebird perched on a stake in large open field east of Halls Road. 30 November 2015. Digiscoped.

 

Note white edges to the primaries, secondaries, tertials and tail feathers. It had a china blue rump. 30 November 2015.

 

Rare in Ontario, this is the first record for the Greater Toronto Area. Mountain Bluebirds are hardy, so with enough food it could survive an Ontario winter. Today it was finding grubs on the ground. 30 November 2015.

 

It was amazing iridescent blue when it flew.
