Yellow Warbler at Bluffers Park in Toronto

Ron Pittaway spotted this Yellow Warbler at Bluffers Park in Toronto on 24 December 2015. It was in rose bushes with lots of rose hips. Yellow Warbler is not expected in winter in Ontario. James (1991) in the Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Ontario lists an early January record in London reported by Goodwin (1980) in American Birds 34:267-270. This recent 2015 Toronto record is a new addition to the Ontario Winter Checklist maintained by Josh Vandermeulen:  http://tinyurl.com/myyulvs

Stephen O'Donnell and I took photos showing diagnostic yellow patches in the tail feathers.

This photo show the tertials neatly edged in yellow.

Frequently it went into one of the spruces nearby.
