Females

Adult females: "Female winter plumage is the plumage having the most white; head-neck has dark patches on white; hindneck always white; most of underparts white. Also the female plumage having the widest range of individual variation in general colouring from rich rusty to gray birds." Palmer 1976. Vol 3. p. 348.

Female bill medium grayish or grayish blue, lighter subterminally with a trace of pinkish, and with dark tip. Palmer 1976. Vol 3.
