Virginia Rails on the Carden Alvar

Today while leading a birding trip for the Couchiching Conservancy, we had amazing views of a family of Virginia Rails. There were two adults and at least 6 young chicks. Sometimes when a lone chick is seen it's mistaken for the rare Black Rail. 11 June 2016.

Please see video of Virginia Rail parents taking care of young chicks

Chicks seemed to take turns scurrying along under the parent, pecking whatever food the parent turned up with its probing bill. 11 June 2016.

It was a spectacle of nature, something I haven't seen before.

The undertail coverts on this adult are beautiful. Carden Alvar on 11 June 2016.
