First winter Barrow's Goldeneye. White,
dusky-edged facial crescent behind the bill is already different
from the dusky white circle of Common Goldeneye. The characteristic
head shape, smaller bill and steeper forehead show in the photo.

Barrow's Goldeneye. Most noticeable in
this photo are the white facial crescents. Also, the white
secondaries are similar to Common Goldeneye, but there is an
additional large white patch on the upper wing of Common Goldeneye
visible in flight and on resting birds - see photos below. Tommy
