Juvenile Hudsonian Godwit at Whitby, Ontario

Juvenile Hudsonian Godwit fed all day, probing on the mudflats at Pringle Creek in Whitby. Link to video of this Hudsonian Godwit fattening up for its continued long flight to South America.  20 October 2018.

It stuck its long bill deep into the mud to probe for food. I think it's eating larvae, worms and possibly small snails. This fall has seen several southbound Hudsonian Godwits in southern Ontario. On same date, five were in Hamilton and one was near Rondeau. 20 October 2018.

Several new grey feathers on the scapulars mean it's molting into first winter plumage. It was a treat to see this large shorebird in beautiful light. Pringle Creek in Whitby, Ontario.
