Presqu'ile Shorebirds - 25 August 2018

Juvenile Baird's Sandpiper at Presqu'ile Provincial Park on 25 August 2018. Note length of primaries beyond tertials and beyond tail. Baird's is a long-distance migrant from High Arctic to South America. There were at least 37 juvenile Baird's, which is a good number for this species.

Juvenile Semipalmated Sandpiper on 25 August 2018. Shorebirds fed at Owen Point and along the beach where mats of algae harbour abundant fly larvae and other invertebrates.

Juvenile Sanderling on 25 August 2018

 

Adult Sanderling molting from breeding plumage to winter plumage. It has many new grey winter feathers on the upperparts. The old breeding plumage is worn and faded and will soon be molted. It is undergoing a complete molt - i.e. all feathers. 25 August 2018.
