Northern Flicker Feather

This tail feather from a Northern Flicker was lying on the beach just above the water line at Frenchmans Bay in Pickering. It was in good condition, which is surprising given the recent weather of wind, freezing rain, ice and snow.  Northern flickers are not common in winter here. How long has it been there and what happened? Its good condition suggest it was recent, and one can only speculate about what happened. Maybe it was chased along the beach by a bird of prey, which either caught it or grabbed at it and it lost one or some feathers. 22 February 2019.
