It had black legs and
feet. On its webbed feet you could see three toes with claws for
gripping rocks and ice. It doesn't have much of a hind toe.
Its black bill was becoming yellow at
the base. It had a black spot on each side of its head and the
lesser and many median coverts were brown, which in flight formed
part of the distinctive dark M on the upper wing.
