Black-legged Kittiwake at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto

In keeping with this unusual summer, a Black-legged Kittiwake showed up among the Caspian Terns at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto. 13 July 2017..

 

It's undergoing wing molt as it molts into second winter plumage. This bird hatched last summer, which makes it a little older than one year.

 

It has a yellow bill and short black legs. It's smaller than a Ring-billed Gull, but larger than Bonaparte's Gull. Ashbridges Bay on 13 July 2017.

 

Rare in summer in southern Ontario, this Black-legged Kittiwake showed up on the flooded beach at Ashbridges Bay. Spotted by Ron Pittaway, it spent some time with adult Caspian Terns on 13 July 2017.
