Barred Owl Removes Vole's Stomach

Scroll down for two photos

This Barred Owl was at Cranberry Marsh in Whitby, Ontario, on 3 November 2004.

We saw the Barred Owl catch a vole and carry it to a branch. Prior to eating it, the owl regurgitated a pellet (left above) from an earlier meal. Then, the owl removed the vole's stomach (right above) and placed it to the side on the branch before eating the vole. When finished, the owl picked up the stomach in its claw and dropped it off the branch.
