Long-billed Dowitcher Identification

This Long-billed Dowitcher in breeding plumage is Identified by a combination of reddish below, well formed bars on sides, heavily spotted across neck, and conspicuous white tips to scapulars. Hillman Shorebird Cell on 3 May 2016.

Comparison with hendersoni Short-billed Dowitcher

These two Short-billed Dowitchers are lightly spotted across the neck compared to the dense spotting on Long-billed. Leamington subdivision wetland on 13 and 11 May 2016.

 

Long-billed Dowitcher has conspicuous white tips to scapulars. Note also white fringes on bars on flanks, a typical Long-billed Dowitcher character. Hillman Shorebird Cell on 3 May 2016.

 

Short-billed Dowitcher lacks conspicuous white tips to the scapulars. The above tips to the scapulars are greyish and salmon coloured, not white as on Long-billed. Leamington 13 May 2016
