Juvenile Western Sandpiper

Rock Point Provincial Park on 30 August 2003

Note the contrasting line of reddish inner scapulars and the fairly long bill, which is decurved near the tip. Note also the small basal web between the middle and outer toes of the left foot. Both Semipalmated and Western Sandpipers have small basal webs between the front toes, webbing is larger between the middle and outer toes, and often can be seen in the field with good binoculars or telescope.
