Cackling, Greater White-fronted, Snow and Canada Geese

Richardson's Cackling Geese Branta canadensis hutchinsii from north of Hudson Bay and Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. Here, they are in front with a Canada Goose at back showing size comparison. I counted 16 Cackling Geese among thousands of Canada Geese in recently-harvested cornfields at Lakeridge Road and Halls Road just north of Taunton in Durham Region. 3 October 2018.

Cackling Geese are much smaller than Canada Geese. They have a stubbier bill, shorter fatter neck, smaller body and smaller, rounder head. Halls Road North in Durham Region on 3 October 2018.

 

Generally they can be picked out from among Canada Geese by their frostier, paler plumage. Feathers on the upperparts are paler and widely edged in white when compared to Canada Goose in back. Halls Road North in Durham Region on 3 October 2018.

Three of the eight white morph Snow Geese. The nearest breeding populations of lesser Snow Geese are on the Hudson Bay coast of Ontario and on Akimiski Island. Halls Road in Durham Region on 3 October 2018
