Turkey
Vulture See-through Nostrils |
 |
This juvenile Turkey Vulture perched beside Halls Road near
Cranberry Marsh. It has a dark grey head, typical of juveniles, not
a red head like on an adult. It could be confused with a Black
Vulture. However its large open oval-shaped nostril (nares) give it
away as a Turkey Vulture. Black Vultures have very narrow nostrils
that would not show like this.13 November 2019. |

Turkey Vultures with their large open nostrils
have an acute sense of smell, which helps them locate carcasses.
Black Vultures do not have a well developed sense of smell. They
often follow Turkey Vultures around because TVs can smell carrion
and food sources. Halls Road in Whitby on 13 November 2019. |

Large nares that go right through can be seen in
this photo. Head colour will gradually change to red, like on
adults. Juvenile Turkey Vulture Halls Road in Whitby on 13 November
