2 Juvenile Wilson's Phalaropes at Holland Landing Lagoons

Wilson's Phalaropes swim so quickly and make sudden moves in order to catch their prey. Holland Landing on 15 August 2019.

 

This individual already has new grey first winter feathers. It's molting into first winter plumage. Holland Landing on 15 August 2019.

 

Both juvenile Wilson's Phalaropes. From Holland Landing they will continue their migration west then south to winter in saline lakes in the high Andes of South America. Holland Landing on 15 August 2019.

 

The foot on Wilson's Phalarope does not have the large lobes or its toes nor does it have the webbing as on the Red-necked and Red Phalaropes, which winter at sea in the southern oceans. Holland Landing on 15 August 2019.
