Varied Thrush at Bark Lake on 7 January 2020

Male Varied Thrush continues at Bark Lake Leadership and Conference Centre in Haliburton County, Ontario on 7 January 2020. This was my second visit and I noticed the colour of its legs - a bright pink-orange.

VIDEO: Varied Thrush watches from white pine at Bark Lake

This spectacular western thrush is rare in Ontario. It perched in a white pine at Bark Lake, where staff are most accommodating and maintain an active feeder with suet and seeds. The Varied Thrush fed underneath the suet feeder. 7 January 2020.

Varied Thrush lives in humid woods of the mountains in the West during the breeding season. In winter they come to the lowlands. Here in Ontario it seems well in the snow and northern woods of Haliburton County. 7 January 2020.

Many thanks to Bark Lake Leadership and Conference Centre staff for hospitality to visitors and continuing to provide food this thrush needs to survive a northern winter.
