Shorebirds at Presqu'ile Provincial Park

Juvenile Baird's Sandpiper at Presqu'ile Provincial Park on Lake Ontario on 7 September 2014. Juveniles are identified by their scaly backs and long wingtips which project beyond the tail at rest. The long wings are probably an adaptation to Baird's being a long-distance migrant. It breeds in the High Arctic and winters in southern South America.
