Birding the Carden Alvar

Passport to Nature Outing - 11 June 2016

We had an excellent morning outing on Saturday 11 June 2016 in the Passport to Nature program for The Couchiching Conservancy. Our group of 20 birders tallied 57 species. Many thanks to all the participants for enthusiasm and energy, and to Arni and Dianne Stinnissen, Ken MacDonald, and everyone who helped spot the birds.

We saw many of the target birds including great views of Loggerhead Shrike, Sedge Wren, Grasshopper Sparrow, Golden-winged Warbler and American Bittern. Sedge Wrens were singing loudly and gave everyone excellent views..

Our group also found Wilson's Snipe, Alder Flycatcher, Eastern Meadowlark, Bobolink, Brown Thrasher, Eastern Bluebird and this Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, which hammered away loudly with its uneven rhythm on a metal sign on this post.

At the end of the trip, we had amazing views of a family of Virginia Rails. Please click this link to more photos and video
