Broad-billed Sandpiper Limicola falcinellus sibirica in juvenal plumage at Osaka Bay on 26 September 2009

On 26 and 27 September 2009, Masahiro Hashimoto, my birding pal, took me birding in Osaka and Kyoto. We visited a water treatment area in Osaka Bay for shorebirds, gulls and ducks, Osaka Castle for migrants and residents, and Osaka Nankou Bird Sanctuary. The next day, we drove to Kyoto where we visited large gardens and rice fields. On Monday morning I returned to Osaka Castle. I am grateful to Masahiro for graciously showing me around on my first visit to Japan.

I was not lucky enough to see a Spoon-billed Sandpiper, but Toru Iwata, a bird photographer I met in Kyoto Royal Garden, photographed a juvenile at Okayama, Tamashima-Harbor Land, near Kurashiki city on 31 September 2009. Toru's great photos are posted here with his permission.
