We were thrilled to find this adult Rock Ptarmigan in summer plumage on the coastal lowlands known as Bulandsnes. This area was amazing for birds and plants. 20 June 2019.

 

VIDEO of Red-necked Phalaropes. We saw over 20 Red-necked Phalaropes on the small ponds.

 

Red-necked Phalaropes have lobed toes and webbing between the toes, often more webbing than on this individual. This is an adaptation because Red-necked Phalaropes spend most of their lives at sea.

 

Common Redshanks were protective of nest or young by giving alarm calls. 20 June 2019

Northern Shovelers aren't common. This female had at least 4 young. Bulandsnes, Djupivogur 20 June 2019.

We saw 20 Red-throated Loons, including several with young. Bulandsnes, Djupivogur on 20 June 2019.

This area is characterized by coastal ponds, heathland, rocky outcrops, saltmarsh and fresh water ponds.
