Black-throated Sparrow in Oakville

Mark Jennings found this Black-throated Sparrow in Oakville on 4 November 2019, the second in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area this fall.

It was feeding on mostly seeds in grass beside a trail in a park behind houses. Oakville on 4 November 2019. Black-throated Sparrows are omnivores in the breeding season and mostly eat seeds in the non breeding season, but will relish a juicy caterpillar anytime.

 

It is aged as in first year (formative) plumage. The black throat is still molting in. Black-throated Sparrows do not have an alternate plumage. Oakville on 4 November 2019.

 

This Black-throated Sparrow has very worn wing coverts and probably juvenile tertials and tail. Oakville on 4 November 2019. This is the second record in 2019 and the 4th all time Ontario record.
