Iceland Circumnavigation with Worldwide Quest - page 7

In Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, in this amphibious craft we cruised among icebergs that have calved off Breidamerkurjokull Glacier. 27 June 2016.

 

Our guide hold up a piece of ancient glacier ice, and broke it up so we could each try a piece.

 

After our sail we visited the nearby beach where iceberg bits are stranded.

 

An Arctic Tern colony is between the main highway and the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon parking lot.

Baby Arctic Terns were all over the road at Jokulsarlon and in Skalanes. Unlike Jokulsarlon where there is constant traffic, Skalanes has very little traffic. 26 June 2016.

 

Great Skua captured an adult Arctic Tern at the colony at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon.

Barnacle Geese nest near Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. They used to be passage migrants from Greenland to Scotland and Ireland but in 1998 began breeding in Iceland. This was my first time seeing Barnacle Geese in Iceland. 27 June 2016.

Heimaey - Westman Islands

Common Murres, both regular form and "bridled" form together on same ledges. These cliffs form alcoves where the birds nest. 27 June 2016.
